Hi everyone. After a number of conversations, it seems that the next phase of the class (after The Subsistence Perspective) should be about prison issues. I would have liked to wait one more week before getting to that, but it turns out that one of the most influential scholars on the topic of the modern prison industry will be speaking on campus next week!
Angela Y. Davis is a philosopher, activist, and, honestly, a legend. If you want to get a sense of how incredible her life has been, take a look at her Wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angela_Davis.
And she’s coming here! February 13 @ 6:30 @ the Shryock.
So, in honor of her visit, we’re going to start our discussion of prisons on Monday. I’ve added two new readings to the “readings page.” For Monday, please read chapter 1 of Michelle Alexander’s The New Jim Crow. If the link doesn’t work, please let me know immediately!
See you tomorrow.
